Who we are. What we do. Why we do it.
Troop Support Specialist. Troop Support Specialist. I love the way my title rolls of my tongue. I take great pride in how crazy professional I sound when I introduce myself on the phone. Good afternoon, my name is Brianna; I’m a Troop Support SPECIALIST at Girl Scouts River Valleys.
It’s a title that requires a little more explanation at social gatherings, however. It’s not like saying I’m an accountant or something. Ah, yes… accounting. Numbers. Got it.
The conversations tend to sound a little more like this:
So Brianna, where do you work?
I work at the Girl Scouts.
You work at the Girl Scouts? That’s so cool! (A five minute conversation about Girl Scout cookies commences. Do you get free cookies? Can you hook me up with free cookies? I wish, people. I wish.)
What do you do there?
I’m a Troop Support Specialist for grades K-3.
. . . Okay, so what do you DO?
What do I DO?
In the interest of being concise I usually say something fairly generic. I answer questions that leaders and volunteers have and connect them with resources. Boom. Easy.
The truth is that our Troop Support Specialists wear a lot of hats and explaining our position to Girl Scout outsiders (who are not necessarily fluent in Girl Scout lingo) can be challenging at times. Even many of the Girl Scout insiders aren’t familiar with who Troop Support is and what we do. If you are one of our veteran volunteers this may be the first time you are hearing of us.
A little backstory of the Troop Support Department…
We are a new(ish) department at Girl Scouts River Valleys. We formed last summer because we heard a need for additional support from troop leaders and volunteers. We are the only Girl Scout council in the country who has a department exclusively dedicated to supporting troops. (But many other councils are looking to follow suit, because, well let’s face it… we’re awesome.)
We want to get the word out. Who we are. What we do. Why we do it (and why you’re going to love us.)
We are a team of enthusiastic individuals (you can see all of our beautiful faces here) who have various areas of expertise in the Girl Scout world but are all well-versed in the art of troop leading
The aforementioned hats we wear are as follows:
Council-Event Planner and Facilitator Extraordinaires: We coordinate, plan, and lead Girl Scout events for many of the journeys and badges.
Word Wizards: Those handy-dandy activity plans are written by us to make planning a troop meeting as simple as possible.
Higher Award Gurus: Gold, Silver, and Bronze. We’re your partners.
Your One-Stop-Support-Shop: Our number one priority is our helping our volunteers find the information and resources they need as efficiently as possible. We are here to listen, to advise, and to connect you to what you need. Need a sounding board when having issues with a volunteer, co-leader, or parent? Call us. Have no idea what a journey is, much less how to teach it to a group of Cadettes? Call us. If you’re wondering if your question is even something we can answer? Call us.
We are your team on the inside. If we don’t know the answer, chances are we are two cubicles down from the person that does and can get you the information you need. Stat.
We were put on this earth (okay, so maybe just in this position…) with the sole purpose of making the lives of leaders and volunteers easier. Let’s face it: volunteering can be a lot of work at times. Isn’t it nice to know that you have a team of professionals who live and breathe Girl Scouts at your beck and call?
If you need me, call me
No matter where you are
No matter how far
Just call my name
I’ll be there in a hurry
You don’t have to worry…
You get the point. I can stop singing into my hairbrush.
