Earlier this fall a group of us Girl Scout River Valleys staff decided we would run a 5K together (a first for me). It turned out to be a great bonding experience and a little confidence booster for yours truly because running has never been my forte, and I did much better than I anticipated.
Something I couldn’t get over at the race was the number of kids in attendance. There were tons – in groups, on their own, with parents or coaches – it was awesome. We’ve been seeing a lot of kid running groups popping up. Girls on the Run is one of our faves and they have an upcoming 5K that your girls can participate in – the Girls on the Run 5K held in the Twin Cities on June 4, 2016.
This 5K is an awesome opportunity for girls to get in shape and feel great, which is why we are encouraging girls to earn a healthy living badge and participate in a 10-week 5K training program!
We’ve got it all mapped out for you. Here’s how it works:
- Register your girls for an activity plan to work toward the My Best Self, Staying Fit, or Good Sportsmanship badge. Registration is $5 per girl, which includes the activity plan and badge.
- Everyone who registers will receive their activity plan in mid-March, which includes steps toward earning their badge as they learn about nutrition and fitness and a 10-week, 5K run/walk training program, which will help them build endurance for the race ahead.
- Accompanying these resources will be information about how you and your girls can register for the Girls on the Run 5K in June. Registering for the race is a great way to celebrate your girls’ hard work and perseverance! (Note that running the race is optional and will have a separate registration fee through Girls on the Run.)
Register to receive the activity plan today. See you on race day!
